How to install a Maxtor Disk

I am trying to install a Maxtor 355Mb disk on our RS/6000-520,
but with very little success.  It seems that although the drive
has the same model # as the drive IBM delivered with the system
they are not the same.  The system recognizes the drive, the drive
passes the diagnostics, but I can't format it from SMIT and hence
can't add it to a volume group.

Has anyone out there installed a 3rd party drive that might be able to
tell me what is going on and give me a few pointers?  Quite frankly I'd
even be willing to pay for some advice at this point.  (seems that just
asking for advice gets very few, re. no, responses)
