Because we thought some people might find it useful. It was fairly
easy to port the MIT monochome driver, and allowed us to get X running
fairly quickly for our internal development. So, we have included it
on our last several releases, figuring that someone could make use of
it while the TIGA and multi-bitplane drivers were being developed
(essentially from scratch; MIT and AT&T don't provide those). Now
that the TIGA driver is working quite nicely, and X11R4 is ported, the
X folks don't have much left to do besides the multi-bitplane driver.
Well, I guess there's always optimization.
