Using a single modem for UUCP

I have installed A/UX 1.1 on my IIcx and I'd like to configure it for
UUCP mail. I have a single 2400 bps, Hayes compatible modem. I've ordered
the book about Managing UUCP and Usenet but in the meantime, I have two
questions.
1. What is the proper way to configure a Hayes compatible modem for dialout
and dialin? Dialin seems to be easy but getting cu to work is tricky. Some
times I get Connected okay and other times it sits there and times out. I'm
not sure how to configure the dip switches and software settings to get it
to work properly.
2. From what I understand so far, you need to be able to dialout to another
UUCP node to exchange mail. According to the 1.0 A/UX docs I have, the modem
is either dialin or dialout but not both. I assume that I have to switch it
to dialout (using multiple init levels) before doing the UUCP stuff. Can this
be done automatically in software?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
