It's a bug. More specifically, it's a bug in NCSA Telnet.

NCSA Telnet tries to do its own name lookup by opening a port and talking
to a "real" name server out there somewhere.
Unfortunately, this clashes with the A/UX system, which has its own UNIXish
name server/resolver code (which MacTCP does use).

Any code that uses MacTCPs built-in name lookup does work.
(Keep in mind that the MacTCP included in A/UX is a special version.)

NB: If you really must have a long signature, please don't include it twice. ;-)
