I managed to see a Mac SE/30 running AUX and was rather surprised at the

That's a worst case - using the finder for Unix filesystems brings in a
lot of emulation - and the finder's not very good at large folders even
under Mac OS :-)
How does the performance of AUX stack up against MacOs on the 2CI's ?
Adequate. You get a lot of Unix for a slight performance loss in
the Mac OS side.
How much disk space is "adequate" for AUX ?
As much as you can get (as with any Unix)
If you do X windows and some developing, 300megs. I am busy filling 600.
Can 3rd party disk drives be used ?
Yes. Try APS, good drives at good prices. You'll have to partition
them with A/UX, though.
Is it possible to run gcc, g++, gnu emacs under AUX ?
Yes. Compiled anbd ready (and source) at wuarchive.wustl.edu
Are any of the usual Unix (Open look, Motif, X....) GUI's available ?
Open Look is Sun specific. Motif is based on X... Yes, X11R4 is
in the A/UX 2.01 distribution, with twm. tvtwm is compilable for
A/UX, and is needed on small screens :-)
To what extent does Apple support AUX users ?
I have had _excellent_ response from A/UX software engineering
(hi Kristin :-) and there's a month of tollfree telephone support
included with the package.
