A/UX and CD-ROM SUMMARY

Here are the responses I've received.  The Toshiba mechanism is
my choice for compatibility and speed.

I've seen messages from several people indicating that the NEC CDR-35
won't work.  I also seen message claiming success while using a Toshiba
drive, but I don't remember the model number.

CD Technology PortaCD (NOT the infamous NEC - this is a toshiba
mechanism) works just great with my IIfx running A/UX. Installing
was a breeze (third time through, that is :-) and I now have
various manuals and libraries on the disk, saving disk space.

(Oh, the PortaCD is cheap from MacConnection... And it's fast,
too (twice as fast as Apples)

I have successfully used a Denon DRD253 drive to install A/UX and to
keep rarely used or useless stuff online (using mount etc.).

The Mac will mount the HFS partition without any additional software if
the drive is attached. This works with some other Apple CDs; for those 
that won't mount I wrote a little INIT to read in the driver (sometimes
Apple zeros out the sbDrvrCount word of the driver descriptor map).

You can actually boot A/UX off the CD-ROM -- I have used this to shoehorn
A/UX into a 40 mb drive.

I've had no problems with several Toshibas, several different models. I use
drivers from OMI under MacOS (no drivers needed under A/UX).
