If someone wanted to write their own device driver, etc, for a super VGA
there are some around which will do 1024x768 without breaking you. I
have a Hedaka which went about $175, and which needs another batch of
memory to get to 1024x768. Figure the total at $250 more or less. That
would be a nice way to go X. Of course the cost of the monitor is so
high that the board is not the major consideration.
Note that CPU and memory (and even disk) are going down, but good
graphics is still very painful.
