256 Colors on Xvga??

I have Interactive UNIX V2.2 on my 386.  I upgraded my VGA board to 
to 512KRAM, so I can display 256 colors (Motif with 16 is a pain, at
best!!), however after I rebuilt the server with 256 and tried to restart
X, I got an error saying use 2, 4 or 16 colors and the server died.  My 
question - 

Did I miss something? (I changed Xconfig and rebuilt the server through 
	sysadm)

Is there a VGA server with the MIT source that I could mung to use 256
	colors (or does already)?

Is there another solution?
