YP address resolution problem...

sheesh! c.u.internals? since when???
LOGIN (or whatever modifies the {u,w}tmp files) seems to be having a problem
resolving host names when using YP. To whit:
In some way that I have not bothered to figure out, the YP server I use refs
the name server to get remote machine entries (reasonable enuf). However, when
I "come in" (not just login, ftp seems to do the same thing) from a remote host
that is not in my YP server's host table (i.e. it does not need to use the name
service), the address does not get resolved into a name (I would figure that this
is a problem with gethostbyaddr). While this seems nitpicky, it DOES screw up
all sorts of stuff that expects to find hostnames, and not IP addresses in
{u,w}tmp!
Two questions:
1) Is this just the way things work (I suspect not!)?
2) I originally installed my system w/o yellow pages, and then installed yp
later...could that have something to do with it (i.e. is there a .so
file somewhere that may not be up-to-date)? Libc.{a,sa*,so*} seem to be
okay.
Please respond directly: I'm more likely to catch yer answer.
Thanks!
