installed a new "CCC" brand 2400 bps internal modem (which was recommended
on the net as being low cost--only $99--and high quality).
Outgoing calls are fine. Incoming calls either receive an initial string of
garbage or an, apparently, clean connect and "login:" prompt. At the login
prompt you can type your account name with no problem. However, when you
press return, rather than receiving a password prompt, you receive either
the garbage string "og%" or the equally sinster "On#8" and the line locks
up! Most people disconnect at this point but I've found that if you just
wait for a minute or two the line will cycle around, emit a line of total
trash and, if you THEN hit return, you'll get a normal login followed by a
normal password.
I figure the problem likely involves the inittab or gettydef entries but there
is nothing obviously wrong with them--first 2400bps is tried then 1200.
The CCC modem has an acknowledged problem with not properly handling DTR;
it cannot, for instance, disconnect a user when they log off. The "og%" and
"On#8" strings are so repeatable that I thought maybe someone could decrypt
them for me?) I'll donate a brain-dead Teleray terminal (No...YOU pay
shipping:-) to the person who solves this mystery!
