uucp to Sun 3/60

I'm trying to get a SysV 386 machine uucping to a Sun 3/60 running BSD
4.2 over a direct connect 9600 line. Almost (!) everything works just
fine - I can uucp files in either direction from either machine.
However, when I try to send mail in either direction, I get file
access denied messages from the Sun. It seems as though the 386 is
trying to send/get C. and D. mail files in /usr/spool/uucp, and the
Sun wants to put them in /usr/spool/uucp/C./ and /usr/spool/uucp/D./.
I *thought* that the problem was a configuration problem on the Sun,
so I double checked the uucp installation there as per the Sun manual.
They are very explicit about directory and file protections in their
instructions; I set every file and directory protection as they
specified, verbatim. I even tried setting every directory and file
read/writeable to the entire world (to test), and got the same
results.
Any insight and/or hints here would be *greatly* appreciated.
