Dual Seagate 4096 problem on Sys V/AT 2.4 solved!

Thanks to all who responded to my pleas for help in getting a second
ST-4096 up and running.  The problem seemed to lie in an assortment
of undocumented jumpers on the underside of the drive.  Steve Froeschke
(uunet!conch!steve) provided a list of jumper configurations, as supplied
to him by Seagate technicians.  This was invaluable information, as
Seagate has a tech support number which guides you through a touch 
tone menu, only to connect you with a busy signal.

I might add that the suggested jumper settings were different than
they way both drives were delivered.  I have no idea what these 
various jumper options are, or whether they should be used for 
single drive configurations  (my single drive used to work as delivered).

I do know that after changing the jumpers, two drives began working together.

To summarize Seagate's jumper configurations, as told by Steve:

No problem! <grin>   Ok, I've got my ST-4096's here in front of me, and
here's the jumper settings I have.  (These were supplied by the Tech's
at Seagate when I called complaining of the same problem you're currently
having.)  :-)

First, take the drives out of your machine, turn them upside down so the
circuit board is facing up, and the edge connectors/power supply plugin are
facing away from you.

Now, there is a jumper next to the anti-static pad located by the EPROM.
This jumper has 3 pins.  Place a jumper connecting the two pins
FURTHEST away from that anti-static pad.

Next, look behind the drive select pins (the bank of 8 jumper settings),
and towards the front of the drive.  You'll see a set of jumper pins in
the following configuration:

                   .

                   .

Put a jumper on to jumper the center pin of the three to the lone pin so
it looks like this when done:
                   .
                   ==
                   .

Last but not least, on the drive select jumpers, (the bank of 8 jumper
options), set your drive select jumper and also, jumper the third option
from the left (as you look at the bank from the front).  It should look
something like this for setting your drive to Drive 1:
