Direct connection

I have switched my 386 machine from a modem connection to 'mccc' (a 3B2)
to a direct connection via a short-haul modem. When I 'cu mccc', the
connection and login is flawless, but screen-oriented stuff
(particularly 'emacs' and 'vi') is all screwed up. When I try to edit an
existing file with emacs, there is a great gap in the middle of the
screen. ^L does not redraw the screen properly. ^S comes up -- below
the status bar - quite often, and it takes a couple of ^Gs to get me
back into editing mode.

Entering this article went without snags, but when I tried a ^L, the
middle of the screen disappeared! What's going on here? I'm "dialing
out" from the same port on the 386 with the same command and the same
environment. And I'm puzzled!

Pete

PS: Here's a possible hint. It must be dropping the ESC in the screen
escape sequence because I see
	mod[11:1Hscreen
on the screen!
