nested makefiles make nothing but coredumps

I mentioned this sometime back in reference to news 3.0; I've run into
it again when trying to make Elm.

If a makefile calls make, the nested make dumps core. Am I the only one
running into this? I'm about to break down and buy the MKS make for
Microport if there's not an easy fix.
