smart mailer advice for V/AT needed

Could someone please offer advice on a smart mailer for system V/AT
on a 286? I tried smail2.? but it would only dump core.
The documents for smail3.1 look like this may not be suitable
for a small system.
We have several net neighbors coming online and would like to
do something better than bang paths to everywhere. In addition,
we would like to handle mail for several machines here hidden
behind the mailer on whale.
Could someone offer suggestions as to what to use, or offer comments
on bringing up smail3.1 on V/AT.
