Well, the official name is "The Design and Implementation of the 4.3BSD UNIX
Operating System Answer Book", which seems a little long. Can't call it the
demon book because you'd get it confused with the other book. Maybe the
"little demon" book?
Anyway, this gives you the answers to the end-of-chapter exercises that
appeared in the "demon book". Since you're all stellar scholars who did the
exercises as soon as you got your hands on the book, you've probably been
stewing in frustration, waiting to know if your answers are correct. Now,
for a low, low price you can find out if you were right. But more than that,
you can be the proud owner of a book with a preface, and twelve chapters, but
no chapter 1.
The questions and answers in these two books should bring you to a deeper
understanding of the BSD OS and other operating systems. Some of the questions
and answers are obvious (Q: "Why does the BSD OS reserve 5 to 10 percent
reserve of free space?" A: "Because our pension plan is invested heavily in
Seagate and Maxtor."), but others are more arcane. This is not a book for
the average user, but for the programmer or even the administrator, the answers
to the questions bring out detailed information on the choices made when
designing 4.3BSD. It's a no-brainer: buy this book.
Published by Addison-Wesley in 1991, "The Design and Implementation of the
4.3BSD UNIX Operating System Answer Book" (thank goodness for cut-and-paste)
has an ISBN of 0-201-54629-9 and lists for $10.95 (our price $9.30 through
April). Its big brother is "The Design and Implementation of the 4.3BSD UNIX
Operating System", also published by Addison-Wesley in 1989; its ISBN is
0-201-06196-1 and it lists for $41.95 (our price is $37.75).
Note: with ISBN number (which also tells publisher), you may be able to have
your local bookstore or library order this book for you.
