non-buffered input for gets etc.

Can someone please tell me how to get a standard tty-based program to not
buffer the input? Specifically on an '040, 2.1 NeXT.
(i.e., if I am looking for at most 10 characters, I don't want anything typed
past that to stay around for the next input sequence; I already wrote my own
routine (need to do some other stuff too), but the buffering is still killing
me)
Forgive such a basic question; I think it has something to do with an ioctl
but my brain is fried and I need to find out how to do this Real Soon Now,
but have lots of more important things to do in the meantime.
Please Email. Thanks.
