Problems of this kind are not always software related..
I have seen this kind of problem before, and it usually ended up
being a memory problem (hardware). Sometimes if you have a flaky
array in the locations where UNIX is trying to store the disk buffers
you can get this kind of symptom.. DEC diags may not show the
memory problem, but you can try moving your memory boards around
in memory and see what happens to isolate the problem.
