Hi,
Many of you know me as the author of *The Unix(tm) Operating System* (the book),
which was one of the first Unix books on the market when it appeared in
early 83. The end of that book contains a 40 page command reference
manual that describes 40 of the most often used Unix commands. I have
recently expanded that material into a separate book, which will be
available this Fall. I am currently looking for a handful of people to
review the manuscript.
I am soliciting reviewers from the net because this is an ambitious
project and I feel that I need more than the usual level of feedback.
The density of facts per page is much higher than in most books, and I
have tried to provide coverage for both BSD and Sys V.
This is NOT the traditional blind review that publishers conduct before
publishing the book. Your role is to provide suggestions for
improvement.
The ms. is 240 pages long. There are 60 UPM style citations, four
overweight citations that cover ex, vi, sh, and csh, and four
appendices.
My editor at John Wiley and I are providing a three-part carrot for
reviewers:
A free copy of the book when it is published.
Up to $50 of John Wiley books.
The thrill of seeing your name in the book's list of acknowledgements.
If you are interested in reviewing this book please send me a brief
note describing your experience with Unix. Tell me how much you've used
Sys V, how much BSD, and what types of environments (student, science,
industry, business). I am looking for a cross section, and my choice of
reviewers will be arbitrary, capricious, and final. I can only
accommodate about a dozen reviewers, so if I get too many replies I will
have to turn some down. Sorry. I will try my best to reply to all who
respond. You must include a US mail address for sending the ms.
Please also include a UUCP mail address to make it easy for me to
contact you.
I'll select the reviewers during the week of Feb 2 and reviewers should
get a copy of the ms. towards the end of the week of Feb 9. Reviewers
will have about three weeks for making comments. More detailed
instructions will be forthcoming.
Thanks
Kaare Christian
