Writing HP cartridge tapes on a Sun 3

Cartridge tapes are rather temperamental beasts.  
The tape is read forward and backward when inserted to
evenly distribute the stress on the tape.
Sadly, I've never tried moving data to/from a Sun, so can't help you there.
