vi vs emacs in a student environment

It is very unlikely to have large editors like EMACS in your root partition.
In many situations it may not even be possible to mount the other 
structures.  A good SA should have knowledge of a standard UN*X editor such
as ed to fix problems that may arise.  However,  I think a good working
knowledge of EMACS is a must for any SA.  

I personally think that a good exposure to EMACS at the University level
is important.  EMACS has been ported to many different architectures of
machines (not necessarily running UNIX).
