troff -- bold italics

Ok, I must admit I've not tried this but it takes too long to download
the fonts to the LaserJet.

Have you tried mounting the italic font in two different positions and
emboldening only one of them?  This should result in Roman, Bold Roman,
Italic, and Bold Italic where the ``Special'' font used to be.
