Patching vi Binary

Is it possible to patch the binary file for vi to obtain a larger space
for macros?  I'd like to be able to give my students 'lvi' to learn
with, but the vi on my 3b2/400 (sysV r3.0 v2) can't hold all of the
author's macros.
