Slow streamer on U5000

I am posting this for a friend that do not run news:

I have a big problem with the tape streamer on U5000/30.  The problem is
that the drive is *very* slow.

In the following benchmark I've used the tar command:

     Machine               Speed  kb/min
                          Backup  Restore

     UNISYS 5000/20         316     454
     UNISYS 5000/30         316   1,039
     UNISYS PC/IT Xenix   1,035   1,825

Why is the backup speed exactly the same on U5000/20 and U5000/30 ?

Can I do anything to speed it up ?
