/usr/spool/uucp files

A couple of elementary questions...

What is the purpose of the /usr/spool/uucp/.Workspace directory?  What
is the relationship between the contents of say
/usr/spool/uucp/<a_connected_site> and .Workspace?  Is it uuxqt that
reads the X/C files and sets the wheels in motion???

(This is  all SysV/HDB, of course.)
