su password

I have noticed on our NeXt workstation that the passwd entry for root
is something like: root::0:...etc...
Now normally one would think that root has no password but this is not
the case. When I type 'su' I must enter the root password to become
super-user. The other puzzler is that when I try to login as root the
password no longer works. Does anyone know what's going on here? Also,
where is the encrypted root password kept?
