Curses question: how to ring the bell in BSD Curses?

What's the right way to ring the bell in BSD curses? I know that
beep() does the trick in SysV curses, but the "obvious" things
I tried for BSD (sticking a bell in the current window, or writing
a bell character to stderr) seem to cause problems.

Is there an answer?
