recovering from errors during unattended backups

I have a csh script run from cron which handles unattended nightly backup of
1+ gigabytes of disk to VHS tape. Normally, everything works like a charm.
However, for monthly backups I have the system shut itself down to single
user, run the backup script from /.profile, then reboot to multiuser. 
So far so good. If, however, the dump is interrupted, /etc/dump demands 
operator intervention, no terminal exists for operator interaction (operator 
is home asleep in any case) and the system hangs. Are there any ways
to circumvent /etc/dump's operator notification so that it just
terminates upon failure (at which point the controlling script can
exit gracefully)?
