And unnecessary. In the Bourne shell, you can do
echo 'Now is the time for all good parties
to come to the aid of man.'
and you can do it in the C shell if you put backslashes at the end of
all but the last line:
echo 'Now is the time for all good parties\
to come to the aid of man.'
