Problem with SysV tar

Hi. I have a question about tar(1). I've already RTFM'ed, and TFM isn't
much help.

I am running:

    Hardware:
	Motorla Delta 3640 (VME) system
	    - MVME141 CPU
	    - MVME327 SCSI controller
	    - Archive 2150S SCSI tape drive
    Software:
	System V/68 R3V5 (Motorla's OEM Sys V.3)

Problem:
TFM for tar(1) states that the default device for tar is
/dev/mt/0m or /dev/mt0 (note: _NOT_ the raw device). I
tried linking my default tape device (/dev/r41t or /dev/41t)
to these devices. Tar can read the tape perfectly (tar -tv,
tar -xv) when this is done. However, when I attempt to WRITE
to the default device (tar -cv files), I get an error that
it cannot create /dev/mt/0m, when I know full well that
	    a) special file /dev/mt/0m exists
	    b) special file /dev/mt/0m is writeable!

	Any ideas out there?

Scott
