Problem with enabling modem

Dear Netlanders:
I am having a problem with my modem. I am running SCO Xenix 2.2.3 on
an IBM/AT clone. I have had the Computone Advantage-X 8 port serial
port board installed for almost 1 year, now. I recently switched my
Telebit Trailblazer+ from /dev/tty1A to /dev/ttym7 in order to improve
system performance. BTW, the computone serial ports are addressed as
ttya0 ... ttya7 -- ttym7 is the modem controlled device corresponding
to /dev/ttya7. All was fine for about 1 week. Until last night...
I had a failed uucp communication during a news transfer, and the
system re-enabled the modem, as it should have. When I attempted to
dial out this morning, I couldn't connect properly with the modem.
When I did a ps -ale, I saw the following:
F S UID PID PPID C PRI NI ADDR SZ WCHAN TTY TIME CMD
101 S 0 1739 1 0 28 20 a11 15 b194 m7 0:02 getty
as part of the display. All along, when the modem was enabled, the
TTY would read ?, rather than m7. I attempted the following:
1. Disabling, and re-enabling the port -- no luck.
2. Disabling the port, doing a reboot, and enabling the port
after the system comes back up -- no luck here either.
3. Disabling the port, editing the /etc/ttys file to make
ttym7 look enabled, so the computer would enable it as
it brings Xenix back up -- no dice.
4. Switching the modem to a different port (ttym6) and enabling
the port -- now I get a getty on m6...
5. Running /usr/lib/uucp/ungetty -r /dev/ttym7 -- no luck.
Does anyone out there have any ideas as to what may be causing my
problem, and any possible solutions? This is really making me nuts!
Please respond via E-mail since I don't see this as being of general
interest. I would truly appreciate any suggestions, and as always,
thanks in advance {8^).
