kernel symbols

I'm looking for a sort of a "map" of the kernel symbols in 4.3 or Sun
4.0.  Ideally, I'd like to get a listing of the structure types of the
various symbols found by doing an nm on the running image.  Is there a
more efficient and documented way of finding this out than guessing or
looking at existing code for examples?  Any manuals, books, etc. you
could point me to would be greatly appreciated.
