What do we (for the second year students) need?
They know about nothing from Unix or any real OS. (They have been using
the Macintosh during the first year).
In a relativly short period they should be able to use Unix, as a
normal user. Thus:
knowing what directories are, how to make them.
Vi, what is it? How does it (basically) works?
What is Unix? What is it structure? Where can I find help?
What's the structure of Unix?
How does one use the file-permissions (rwx etc.)?
What's a .login file? and .cshrc?
(BTW we use default a csh-shell, and BSD 4.2 [from Gould]).
How does the mail system works?
(They are NOT allowed to use NETNEWS)
These are the mean point.
If there would be a little word about using C in combination with
Unix, it would be a plus, but it's not essential.
You see, what we need is real basic stuff.
(If you have addition material, eg. about I-nodes etc. it would be
helpfull too, but we are not looking for a compleet Unix ref.)
I'm sure I forgot some points, but by now you will probably know
what we are looking for.
Thank you very much already,
Serge Wallagh (wallagh at cs.vu.nl)
