How do I ask "if NOT" in shell?

how about:

TESTCOMMAND
if [ ! $? -eq 0 ]
then
	BODY
fi

ie:

grep foobar /etc/passwd >/dev/null 2>&1
if [ ! $? -eq 0 ]    OR:   if test ! $? -eq 0
then
	BODY
fi
