Getting News

A friend of mine not on the net has asked me:
If I had a unix machine and got a feed from some other
UNIX machine nearby, and wanted to subscribe to unix
news, wouldn't I get 4mb per day? Also, even at 19.2
k baud, it takes awhile to xmit 4mb.
How much news comes over the net each day? Is it compressed?
Can you somehow only get parts that you are interested
transmitted to your machine?
Thanks,
James A. Landay
