It seems to me that the original compress sources from the net did have
manual pages for compress and for tarmail, etc.

In any case, compress 4.3b, as it exists in LIBrary 3 of the UNIXFORUM on
CompuServe, certainly has documentation.

If you haven't got, or can't get at, that version, yell back.
