Nroff Problem: Why Does This Line Cause a Break

The following line, included in an "end-page" macro to draw a line
between two columns of print, causes a "break".  Anyone want to tell
me what I'm doing wrong?
'	if n \{\h'|6.5i'\v'-8.83i'\L'8.83i'\}

I suppose that e-mail replies would be more appropriate; I'll post a
