Troubles with zcat

I've recently begun using the compress program under SCO Xenix.
The manual says that I can use the zcat afile.Z to read a compressed
file. However, if I try to do this:

zcat afile.Z | more

all I get is a zcat'ed file across my screen. What salient point am I missing?
