RPC query

I'm not quite sure where to post this but here goes...
I want to implement a non-stateless server over an ethernet running tcp/ip.
I want to use RPC because it simplifies a lot of the setting up a lot of
procedures, especially with Sun's rpcgen and the XDR stuff. Now as I
understand RPC, the client makes a request and gets its results immediately.
I wish to make it more stateful ie. a client can receive messages that are
the result of another clients request. Is this possible? I would like to
avoid polling the server to see if any information is available.
(Is this the wrong way to go about it?)
Answers by E-mail please to the addresses below and I'll summarise.
