"sh: no stack space" error

I'm getting the error message "sh: no stack space" on my system for
certain commands on the second disk drive only.

The system:

NCR Tower XP (68010) running NCR Release 3.00.00 Unix. This is a
plain vanilla SysV.? Unix.

The error occurs only on the second physical disk drive, usually
when invoking "pwd", "find", and "cpio". It also occurs less
frequently with other commands when using shell macro expansion
and redirection; for example:

cpio -ict < $uucp/infile

where uucp evaluates to "/usr/spool/uucppublic".

The same commands executed when my current directory is on the first
physical disk never produce this error message.

Any ideas on what this may be?

This is probably a low-interest question, so email to uunet!sean!mka
is preferred.

Thanks in advance,
Mike Anderson
