Advice on Unix Internals

Hello Netusers;

I have been using Unix for a while in my graduate studies at Syracuse
University, and would like to do an Independent Study course to learn Unix
Internals.
What I would like to get from this is a better understanding of scheduling,
shell programming, and so on.

Any advice on what should be the subject of my independent study, what books,
papers to read ?
