/etc/rc or /etc/inittab ?

I have an X.25 communications program which operates as a demon
and is totally disconnected from any controlling terminal etc.

It is possible though for this program to stop due to some error
or other and I am trying to decide how best to restart it.

The most natural solution to come to mind was that I put it in
/etc/inittab and ask it to respawn it.

In which case I could always be sure it was running.

It is currently started by /etc/rc.

My question then is, on what basis are programs either started by
/etc/rc or /etc/inittab.

Does anyone have any rules they use ?

Any drawbacks which are not obvious ?

Regards
