One of my co-workers is attempting to determine whether our group
should consider moving our SCCS-based source-code management system
to an RCS-based system. Aside from the known differences (e.g., an
RCS benefit is doing the 'delta's from the last delta instead of the
first), any practical information, such as
-- how & by whom RCS is supported (if it is)
-- how widespread the binary distribution of RCS is
on major UNIX platforms (e.g., vanilla SysV, BSD,
AIX, Ultrix, OSx, etc.), and (especially if it isn't)
what the procedures are for getting source code
(compare with getting Kermit code) & portability of
said code
-- real-world experience (lots of files to maintain,
large files, large delta numbers, possible branching)
in using both within the same or similar environment
-- [dis]advantages you've experienced using either or both
would be much appreciated. Any thoughts on the subject can be sent
to me at one of the various addresses below, or you can contact
Ed Miner at the work number below. Thanks!
