CD ROMs and Unix again

Hello, I need a little help with Unix, but first, here is my set up:
AT&T 6386/20 135MB HD, 4MB RAM.
AT&T Unix SysV Rel 3.2.2
AT&T Starlan Unix Server 3.2 (StarGROUP 3.2 actually)
Purpose: Automate CD ROM's for the UofL library. We are also putting in a
386/SX running StarGROUP DOS Server. I don't anticipate any problems here.
Now my dilemma. I don't know anything about CD ROMs in Unix. I know very
little about them under DOS. I expect that I need a device driver for the
drives (Hitachi) and there was none supplied Unix drivers (DOS only). Since
the devices under DOS are accessed as another disk drive E:, F: etc and using
their file system, this could pose a problem. However, this information could
be constructed by the DOS driver software. I heard once that CD ROMs had a
standard format so that disk-a could be used on a MAC as well as a DOS box.
Has anyone experienced CD ROMs under Unix before? What kind of pointers can
you give me or device drivers that you can point me to (or supply me with)?
