How do I determine which newsgroups I can post to?

At our site, we seem to have three categories of newsgroups:

1.  Newsgroups we can post to, and that are distributed to the world.
2.  Newsgroups we can post to, and that are NOT distributed to the world.
3.  Newsgroups we can't post to, and get an "unknown group" message.

My questions:

1.  How can I tell which group is in which category?
2.  How can I change a "non-postable" group into a "postable" group?
