Using a Maxwell 1200VP modem on a Sun 3/80 under SunOS 4.0.3

I have a Maxwell 1200VP modem which I would like to use for both incoming
and outgoing calls to/from a Sun 3/80 running SunOS 4.0.3.  I have
configured and rebuilt the kernel successfully to enable hardware carrier
detection.  I have been able to use Tip and Kermit to dial out with the
modem.  I have also been able to dial into the Sun and successfully log in.

The problem is that after I have dialed into the Sun and logged off, the
1200VP does not hang up.  Once the logout has completed, it gives me
another "login:" prompt instead of hanging up.  Pressing ^D at this point
also returns the "login:" prompt instead of hanging up.  This would not be
so bad if the following promblem did not occur.

I noticed that after hanging up I was receiving "Repeated Login Failure"
messages on the console.  Apparently, after I hung up the remote modem, the
host modem would echo the "login:" and "Password:" prompts back to the Sun,
which would then mistake them for a login attempt.  While this activity is
going on, the modem is useless for dialing in or out.

I have tried various combinations of parameters in /etc/gettytab, including
setting the "to=" capability to various non-zero values to force a hangup
with no success.  I have checked the cable to make sure the carrier detect
is making it through.

Is there a way to get this modem to hang up and shut up?
