Mail servers: Seeking comments and source code

I'm looking for source code, documentation, and user/administrator
comments about any mail/archive servers running under UNIX. I'm going
to combine the best documentation and more useful features of the
various packages into a mail server for our department.

We will be sending mostly ASCII text, but some binary files might need
to be transferred. (I could pre-uuencode the files if necessary, but
it would be nice if the server did this automatically.) The only code
and documentation I have to date is William Wells' KISS server posted
to alt.sources back on February 8th. I'm interested in other servers
such as those running at decwrl, netlib, csnet, etc. I'm sure there
are lots of other servers I don't know anything about. You might have
a favorite (or least favorite) server you can describe from either a
user or administrator standpoint. (Source would be great, too!)

A large part of the project will be writing good documentation for less
technical users who want to access the archive via mail. So, comments
in regarding this would also be appreciated.

I will summarize and post a followup to comp.mail.misc (only).
