Get past the EOF mark on an exabyte

I've managed accidently to overwrite a Exabyte tape which contained a
tar file with the beginning of another tar file. I interrupted the
second write, so most of the old data is still on the tape but I
do not know how to get passed the EOT mark that seems to be
written after the second interruped write. Both writes were done
using "tar" piped to a "dd" on a remote host.

I've tried a couple of dd's on the raw device but it will
not result in anything else but the failure after the reading
of the overwrite file.

The Exabyte host is a Sun 490, sunning SunOS 4.1. All commands used
are standard commmands.

Any suggestions or ideas sent by mail will be most appreciated.
