Length of the PID field

Can anyone answer this question: "What is the maximum number of digits allowed
in a PID (or PPID) returned from 'ps'?"  Is 4 the maximum?  Could the PID (and
PPID) be more than 4 characters?  Is this system-specific or system-configurable?
