Elm make under Xenix 286

I am experiencing problems (brick wall!) trying to get Elm 2.3 to
"make" under Xenix 286 (new version, purchased only three months ago).
I am getting the stack overflow problem at the end of doing "sh Configure",
but applying the fix described in an attached email msg to increase the
stack space in sh makes no difference. I have even added extra memory to
the computer (an Epson PC-AX2, alias Equity II) to no avail.
I am aware that there are several patches (six??) available for elm 2.3;
as getting ftp stuff is difficult for me (have to go via bitftp and wait),
are any of these known to address this problem.
Bill Campbell (uunet!camco!bill) has been kind enough to send me the xenix
fixes necessary to make smail and deliver work so it's just elm that is
holding me up!
Warning - unix neophyte here; all replies should consist of words of one
syllable only and be in a recognisable dialect of English (this excludes
Bezerkley).
Thanks

P.S. I would also like to "make" this on an Altos 2086 with older xenix.
